S&P 500 Rallies as Falling Oil Prices and Bond Yields Boost Investor Confidence
The S&P 500 moved higher on Thursday, rising around 1.1% as investors reacted positively to falling oil prices, lower US bond yields and a strong recovery in technology stocks.
One of the main reasons for the rally was a drop in US Treasury yields. Bond yields had recently moved higher following concerns about inflation and interest rates, putting pressure on stock markets. When yields fall, shares — particularly technology and growth companies — can become more attractive to investors.
Oil prices also moved lower as concerns surrounding global supply eased slightly. Lower oil prices can be positive for markets because expensive energy can increase costs for businesses and consumers, while also pushing inflation higher.
Technology stocks were among the strongest performers during the session, helping push both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq higher.
The rally also came shortly after the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.25 percentage points, taking its benchmark rate to between 3.75% and 4.00%.
Markets initially reacted negatively to the decision, particularly after the Fed suggested that further interest-rate increases could still be needed if inflation remains high.
However, investors appeared more optimistic on Thursday as bond yields and oil prices fell.
For investors, attention will now remain on inflation, employment and energy prices. If inflation continues to remain elevated, further interest-rate increases could still create volatility across US stock markets in the coming months.
