US Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates as Inflation Remains High

The US Federal Reserve has increased interest rates by 0.25 percentage points, taking its benchmark rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. This was the Fed’s first interest rate rise in more than three years.

The decision comes as inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target of 2%. US consumer prices increased by around 3.4% over the year to August, with higher energy prices contributing to the recent increase.

Higher interest rates are designed to slow inflation by making borrowing more expensive. Loans, mortgages and credit become more costly, which can reduce consumer spending and business investment. Lower demand can eventually help bring price increases under control.

For financial markets, higher rates can create mixed results. The US dollar may strengthen, as investors can receive better returns from dollar-based assets. Meanwhile, stock markets can face pressure because companies may experience higher borrowing costs and investors may become more attracted to bonds and cash.

Following the latest decision, the dollar initially strengthened while US bond yields increased.

Investors will now be watching future inflation and employment figures closely, particularly as the Federal Reserve has indicated that further interest-rate increases remain possible if inflation stays elevated.
