The S&P 500 rose around 0.5% and reached a new all-time intraday high. The Nasdaq Composite also gained 0.5% and hit a fresh record, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added roughly 205 points, or 0.4%.
Technology Stocks Lead the Rally
Semiconductor shares were among the strongest performers during the session.
Marvell Technology surged around 7%, while Nvidia and Broadcom both gained approximately 1%. The move highlights how chipmakers continue to play a major role in driving US equity markets higher.
Key areas traders are watching include:
For investors, lower yields can be supportive for growth stocks because they reduce the discount rate applied to future earnings.
Treasury Yields Move Lower
US government bond yields eased after recently reaching multi-year highs.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell by around 2 basis points to 5.29%, having reached its highest level since 2002 during the previous session.
The 2-year Treasury yield also declined by around 3 basis points to 4.802%.
Bond markets have remained volatile in recent weeks, with investors balancing strong economic growth, Federal Reserve policy and high oil prices against expectations for future interest-rate decisions.
Morgan Stanley Wealth Management investment chief Lisa Shalett noted that recent bond-market volatility has increased, although it has not yet reached the extremes seen around the 2022 equity bear market.
Oil Prices Fall Below $100
Lower energy prices also provided support for equities.
Brent crude fell around 2% to approximately $98 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures dropped about 1% to roughly $87 a barrel.
Falling oil prices can help reduce inflation expectations, which may in turn reduce pressure on central banks to keep interest rates higher for longer.
This relationship is particularly important for technology and growth stocks, which are often more sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations.
Federal Reserve Minutes in Focus
Traders are now looking towards the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting.
The minutes could provide further insight into policymakers’ decision to raise interest rates and offer clues about the likely direction of future monetary policy.
Outlook for Traders and Investors
The latest record highs suggest bullish momentum remains strong across US equities.
However, traders should continue monitoring Treasury yields, oil prices and Federal Reserve commentary. A renewed rise in yields or energy prices could put pressure on highly valued growth stocks.
For longer-term investors, the key question is whether earnings growth can continue to justify current valuations, particularly within the technology sector.
For short-term traders, upcoming Fed communication and moves in bond and oil markets could remain important drivers of volatility across the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.
