Meta Stock Forecast: META Technical Analysis After Earnings Sell-Off

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) stock faces renewed uncertainty following a sharp post-earnings sell-off, with investors weighing strong underlying business growth against rising AI spending and concerns over future profitability. After rallying for five consecutive weeks, shares have pulled back from resistance near $780, raising questions about whether the decline represents a buying opportunity or the beginning of a deeper correction.

Meta Stock Analysis: Key Support and Resistance Levels

Meta shares finished the week at approximately $644.29 following an after-hours decline of around 7% after its latest earnings report.

On the weekly chart, META had rallied for five consecutive weeks, recovering towards its previous highs before encountering resistance around $780. This level appears to have attracted profit-taking ahead of earnings, and the subsequent sell-off has significantly weakened the short-term technical outlook.

Both the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) are now turning lower, suggesting that bullish momentum is fading. If selling pressure continues, short-term traders may look for further downside before attempting to buy the dip.

The key support area to watch is the long-term ascending trendline dating back to November 2022. A retest of this trendline could bring the $575 region into focus, potentially providing an area where buyers attempt to establish a support base.

On the upside, resistance around $780 remains an important level for any sustained recovery.

Meta Earnings Analysis: Why Did META Stock Fall?

Although Meta's underlying earnings performance was viewed positively in several respects, investor concerns have centred on the company's substantial capital expenditure (capex), particularly its investment in artificial intelligence.

Spending on AI infrastructure, computing capacity and new technologies is expected to remain significant as Meta competes to develop its AI capabilities. However, rising investment is putting pressure on free cash flow, prompting investors to question how quickly these expenditures will generate sufficient returns.

Another area of uncertainty is Meta's MUSE initiative and whether its investment will deliver commercially meaningful results. Investors may be wary of repeating the experience of the company's metaverse ambitions, which required substantial spending and raised questions about the eventual return on investment.

These concerns help explain why even encouraging underlying business performance may not be enough to support the share price when expectations are high.

META Stock Forecast: Could Shares Fall to $575?

The bearish scenario centres on the continued deterioration in technical momentum following earnings.

With both the RSI and MACD pointing lower, further selling pressure could push Meta shares towards the long-term ascending trendline established in November 2022. Based on the current technical outlook, the $575 area is a potential downside level to monitor.

Such a move would represent a further correction from the latest closing price and could attract additional bearish sentiment in the short term.

However, a decline towards $575 would not automatically confirm a longer-term bearish trend. If buyers defend the trendline and establish support, the area could become a potential recovery point for investors looking at Meta's longer-term growth prospects.

The key will be whether the stock stabilises around support or breaks below it with continued selling pressure.

Could META Stock Recover to $780 by the End of the Year?

Despite the recent sell-off, a bullish recovery remains possible if broader market conditions improve.

The remainder of the major technology earnings season could play an important role. Strong results from other large technology companies may help restore confidence in AI-related investments and support a broader recovery in technology stocks.

Oil prices will also remain important. Stable or declining oil prices could ease some inflation concerns and reduce pressure on interest-rate expectations, potentially improving sentiment across equity markets.

If these factors align and Meta establishes a support base, a year-end Santa Claus rally could help shares recover towards the $780 resistance region.

Nevertheless, a return to that level would require a substantial recovery from current prices. Improving technical momentum and stronger buying interest would likely be necessary to support such a move.

Meta Stock Outlook: Is META a Buy-the-Dip Opportunity?

Meta's latest earnings report has created a divide between its long-term investment potential and its short-term technical outlook.

For longer-term investors, the sell-off could present a potential buying opportunity if the underlying business continues to grow and AI investments ultimately generate attractive returns.

For short-term traders, however, falling momentum, elevated capital expenditure and uncertainty surrounding future profitability could continue to weigh on the share price.

The main levels to monitor are $575 as a potential downside support area and $780 as a key resistance level. Whether META moves towards either level will depend on subsequent price action, broader technology earnings and changing investor sentiment.

The key signal over the coming weeks will be whether Meta can establish support and reverse its declining momentum, or whether continued selling pressure drives the stock towards its longer-term trendline.
