The chipmaker may help guarantee a huge data-centre project, increasing both potential demand and financial risk

Nvidia is reportedly discussing a guarantee of up to $250 billion in financing for a major OpenAI data-centre development, raising fresh concerns about the increasingly complicated funding behind the artificial intelligence boom.

The proposed project would involve a 10-gigawatt data centre in Ohio, developed by SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy. The complete project, including computing equipment, could cost more than $500 billion.

Nvidia may also finance up to $350 billion of chip purchases associated with the project. Its shares declined following the report as investors considered the risks of a leading supplier helping to fund the customers buying its products.

Why Would Nvidia Support the Project?

OpenAI requires enormous computing capacity to train and operate increasingly advanced AI models.

By helping the project secure financing, Nvidia could support future demand for its graphics processors and strengthen its influence across the AI ecosystem.

The potential advantages include:

  • Securing a large future customer
  • Supporting demand for Nvidia processors
  • Expanding the wider AI infrastructure market
  • Preventing competitors from supplying the project
  • Strengthening Nvidia’s relationship with OpenAI

However, guaranteeing financing is very different from simply selling chips.

Why Are Investors Concerned?

A financing guarantee could expose Nvidia to substantial losses if the development encountered financial difficulties or if OpenAI could not meet its commitments.

It also raises concerns about circular financing. Investors may question whether demand is entirely organic when suppliers are helping customers obtain the money required to purchase their products.

The arrangement could expose Nvidia to:

  • Credit risk
  • Construction delays
  • Lower-than-expected AI demand
  • Falling chip prices
  • Rapid technological obsolescence
  • Regulatory scrutiny

AI infrastructure investment by major technology companies could reach extremely high levels, while the profitability of many AI services remains uncertain.

What Could This Mean for Markets and Investments?

The agreement could be bullish if the data centre is completed successfully and generates strong demand for Nvidia hardware.

However, it may also signal that the AI investment cycle increasingly depends on debt, guarantees and complex financing structures.

This could be negative for highly valued technology shares if investors begin demanding stronger cash flow and clearer returns on investment.

For speculators, Nvidia may remain highly sensitive to headlines around OpenAI, data-centre construction and AI spending. Positive project developments could support the shares, while financing problems could cause sharp declines.

The AI boom remains a major long-term opportunity, but investors may now pay closer attention to who is funding it and who ultimately carries the risk.
